Chapter Thirteen

Bailey had always hated doctor’s appointments, but when Morgan asked her to go, she knew she would never deny her sister anything. The chair in the examining room was uncomfortable. She drummed her fingers on her jean-clad knee that continued to bounce. The three-month-old magazines didn’t interest her in the least.

“Stop. You’re making me nervous,” Morgan said, perched on top of the table wearing nothing but a paper dress.

“Sorry, just nervous,” Bailey admitted. She had missed the first sonogram because of a work meeting and was thankful she could attend the appointment, but hospitals in any capacity made her nervous since she had yet to receive any good news at one.

Bailey listened to her sister’s heels hit the metal table over and over. It raked her nerves and she could say something like her sister did to her, but she wasn’t the one freezing on a noisy padded table. Bailey watched as another shiver passed through her sister and wished they could turn the heat up. She never knew why hospital rooms had to be set to the temperature of a meat locker since they were only given a paper dress that was slit from top to bottom. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get the dress to close and Bailey had even draped her coat over her sister’s legs to try to give her a smidgen of warmth.

“Well, don’t be. You’re not the one sitting up here in a paper dress with a bladder that feels full enough to fill an Olympic size pool. I hope they get here soon or I’m not going to make it,” Morgan said.

There was a knock at the door and soon a tech was rolling in an ultrasound machine. Bailey retrieved her coat and sat down again, still unable to stop her knee.

“Ok, if we could just get you to lie back on the table,” the nurse instructed and assisted Morgan as she got as comfortable as the table would allow.

Bailey continued to sit on the chair and waited for the machine to whirl to life. The tech pressed a few buttons, turned a few knobs, flipped a switch, and finally pulled out what she referred to as a wand.

“If you want to come over here, we’re about ready to start.” She motioned to Bailey.

Slowly Bailey shuffled to her sister’s side. The nurse uncovered Morgan’s belly and Bailey couldn’t believe her sister was five months pregnant. Her eating habits had hardly changed. Bailey had tried to keep their meals healthy by adding more vegetables. She couldn’t believe the change in her sister’s body. Her belly was now round. It looked like it could have been a few extra pounds of padding but Bailey knew it was the baby making its existence known.

“Sorry, this is going to be a little cold. What this does is acts as a conductor to allow us to get good view of your little baby there.” The tech squirted a liberal amount of gel on the metal wand before placing it on Morgan’s exposed belly.
